While SportsGrass turf is lower maintenance than natural grass, and perhaps than other turf products as well, establishing a basic maintenance routine and schedule will encourage the best performance and longevity of your surface.
Part of the value of selecting SportsGrass is having a local team that has ownership in the process. Your SportsGrass team will set up a semi-annual maintenance program where we come out to the field, inspect it, make any minor repairs or corrections needed, clean and groom the turf, and provide you with a summary of what was done (All in line with the STC Bi-annual maintenance guidelines below). This can be a for-fee service, but often times is included in the agreement with a new field. (Please consult your local SportsGrass team).
Additionally, the owner of the field should conduct periodic maintenance by grooming the field as needed, keeping loose debris off of the field, and bringing any potential issues to the attention of the SportsGrass team
STC Guidelines for Synthetic Turf Maintenance
As one of just a few Synthetic Turf Council Certified Builders, we recommend adhering to their standards for maintenance. Here’s an overview of what they recommend in the official Guideline for Synthetic Turf Maintenance, available in full from the STC website.
Routine Maintenance: Ongoing
- Conduct inspections and perform minor repairs to avoid playing hazards.
- Keep the playing surface clean and free of debris and contaminants.
- Check and maintain proper infill levels to provide a consistent surface.
- Brush and groom the surface to enhance its appearance, keep grass fibers upright, and maintain even infill levels.
Comprehensive Maintenance: Biannual
- A professional field inspection can assess the field, especially heavy wear areas, identify weak or loose seams/inlays and repair damage. Sport performance testing should also be considered.
- Decompaction of infill is important for improving shock absorption and synthetic turf drainage.
- Perform a detailed check of infill levels, adding and redistributing infill, and leveling the infill to the field builder’s specifications.
- Clean the surface to remove surface and embedded dirt and debris.
- Use a magnet attached to your maintenance equipment to remove metal objects from the field.
- Weed and pest treatment should be performed as required.
- Partial removal and reinstallation of infill material may sometimes be necessary to remove foreign matter that has contaminated the infill system, relieve grass fibers that may be trapped in the infill or improve drainage.
